I like coloring pages of musicians a lot. Specially the ones I’ve made of musicians I’ve known or have met personally. Like trumpeter Kurt Weiss or saxophone player Don Braden. But I felt there was a small gap, a little emptiness, and it did not go away. What could it be? Who was missing in this little line up of fine jazz musicians? The answer is drummer Owen Hart Jr.
I’ve met all these guys in the time I worked at the conservatory in Groningen, the Netherlands, where they all were teachers. As a hobby photographer I took many pictures of students and teachers. Owen was one of them. Owen is a talented, tall and maybe a bit shy, but certainly a very friendly guy. Nowadays, just like me, he isn’t working at the conservatory in Groningen anymore, and I don’t have an idea where he might be.
Swingin’ Groningen Jazz Festival
I took a series of pictures when Owen Hart Jr. played together with Dena DeRose and Joris Teepe at the Swingin’ Groningen Jazz Festival in 2003. I used the pictures for several conservatory-media (like newspaper and website) and burned them also on cd to add them to my personal archive at home. The best photo in that series was the one with Owen behind his drums, smiling at Dena.
Lost
Now, several years later, I don’t have a clue where the cd is. I also couldn’t find any of the photo’s on the hard disk of my computer and I almost started to hate myself for being so careless. But last week I decided to perform a search on my computer at work again. I looked there before, but with no result. The Prince Claus Conservatory (as it is called nowadays) is part of the Hanze University, where I work. ‘You’ll never know’ I thought. ‘It might be there somewhere.’
‘Hello Frank’
And after a while, there he was. Owen Hart Jr, looking at Dena DeRose from behind his drum kit. Not exactly smiling, like I thought, but this was the one I was looking for. It turned out to be a cropped version of the original picture, which was of much better quality than this one, but hey… It was like, after years, I met a good friend again, and I imagined he said ‘Hello Frank’ again, with his typically low voice. ‘Hi Owen, nice to see you again’ I said. ‘I hope you are doing well, wherever you are.’
So, Owen will be joining Don and Kurt in the jazz line up at LetMeColor.com soon. I’m off now. I’ll have to turn a jazz drummer into a free printable coloring page.
